Seeking Legal Assistance

We understand that you may be facing challenging legal situations that require prompt guidance. While the Hispanic Bar Association (HisBA) does not offer legal services directly, we are committed to helping you find the resources and support you need.

Here are some resources to assist you:

  1. Consejos Legales: The Mexican American Bar Association of Houston (MABAH) and the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston (HisBA), in association with the Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVL), offer a free, anonymous telephone legal advice service to the Spanish-speaking community through Consejos Legales. Consejos Legales takes place the first Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Licensed volunteer attorneys will provide simple legal advice, answers to legal questions, and referrals to other helpful resources.
  2. Texas Law Help: Texas Law Help provides free legal information, advice, and assistance to individuals in need. Visit their website or call their hotline to access their services.
  3. Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVL): As the largest provider of pro bono legal services in Harris County and surrounding areas, HVL offers free legal assistance on civil matters to eligible low-income residents. Answer a few questions on their website to see how Houston Volunteer Lawyers can help you.
  4. Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA): LSLA protects and advance the civil legal rights of low-income Texans by providing advocacy, legal representation, and community education that ensures equal access to justice. LSLA only works on civil cases and they do not handle criminal cases. You can apply for services via their online application.
  5. St. Frances Cabrini Center for Legal Assistance: Catholic Charities’ St. Frances Cabrini Center for Immigrant Legal Assistance provides a diverse array of immigration legal services in greater Houston. Their experienced corps of attorneys and legal professionals provide free and low-cost legal services to children who arrived in the U.S. alone, families seeking immigration assistance, crime victims, asylum seekers, and immigrants seeking to become U.S. citizens.
  6. Law School Legal Aid Clinics:
    1. South Texas College of Law Legal Clinics: The Randall O. Sorrels Legal Clinics at South Texas College of Law Houston offer free legal services to underserved populations through licensed attorneys, generally working with law students who are earning academic credit. Areas for which qualified individuals may receive legal services generally focus on these specialties: family law, estate planning, probate, guardianship, landlord/tenant, veterans issues, trademarks, patents, asylum and human trafficking, actual innocence, domestic violence, tax controversies with IRS, and immigration. You can request legal assistance through their online application.
    2. Thurgood Marshall School of Law: The Legal Clinic focuses on family law, wills, probate, & guardianship, and criminal law, and immigration. You can contact their clinic at 713.313.7275 or learn more through their website.   
    3. University of Houston Law Center Clinics:  The Legal Clinics offer law students an opportunity to have hands-on, practical experience in the legal profession while still in law school. Under the guidance and supervision of clinical faculty, law students handle all aspect of cases, from interviewing, to filing motions, to conducting trials in court. The clinic works on Family Law, Probate, Immigration and Landlord/Tenant issues. Applicants must meet income qualification of 125% of Federal Poverty Guidelines.   1. Houston Lawyer Referral Services (HLRS): Sponsored by nine local bar associations and meeting the standards of the American Bar Association, HLRS connects individuals with experienced attorneys offering an initial 30-minute office consultation for a nominal fee of $20. Reach out to them at (713) 237-9429 to find a lawyer specializing in your area of need.
