The Federal Public Defender, Southern District of Texas, is accepting applications for a Case Management/Legal Assistant to be stationed in its Corpus Christi, TX branch office (Position Announcement No. 26-13C). The office provides defense services in federal criminal cases and related matters by court appointment under the Criminal Justice Act.

Location: Corpus Christi, TX
Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Salary: $45,630 to $62,023 per year (JSP-6, Step 1 to JSP-9, Step 1), commensurate with experience and qualifications; includes federal benefits (health and life insurance, retirement, Thrift Savings Plan)

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent with at least two years of general experience and one year of specialized experience (some higher education may be substituted for experience)
  • Personal-computer skills, advanced word-processing skills, and Spanish-language fluency required; law office experience preferred
  • U.S. citizenship required (non-citizens may be interviewed and considered, but offers are made only to individuals who qualify under an exception in 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)(B))
  • Appointment subject to a satisfactory background investigation, including an FBI name and fingerprint check

Duties
Provide legal secretarial and clerical support to one to two attorneys, including word processing; opening, closing, and organizing case files; data entry and record keeping; maintaining attorneys’ calendars of court settings and filing deadlines; typing legal documents, briefs, and correspondence in Word; performing conflicts checks; answering telephone inquiries; and routing mail. Candidates should have strong communication skills, initiative, and the ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced office.
