Scholarships

Each year, HisBA provides a number of scholarships to deserving law students who are active members of the Hispanic Law Student Association (HLSA) at their respective law schools.

1L Scholarship Program

The Hispanic Bar Association of Houston awards scholarships to deserving first-year law students at each of the three Houston area law schools. The scholarship is designed to assist students in fulfilling professional aspirations and will be awarded to students based on financial need, demonstrated leadership and commitment toward the advancement of Hispanics in the legal profession, extracurricular activities, and potential for successful study of the law.

HisBA’s 2018 1L scholarships will be awarded at the President’s Day Gala in May, 2018.

The deadline for the 2018 application submission was Sunday, April 9, 2018. Applications for 2019 will be available in the spring of 2019.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to receive the scholarship, applicants must be first-year law students and members of the Hispanic Law Student Association (HLSA) at the law school.

James DeAnda 2L Scholarship Program

The Hispanic Bar Association of Houston and the Houston area law schools jointly sponsor the James DeAnda Scholarship program each year. The scholarship honors James DeAnda, the former Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas and a long-time champion of civil rights. This scholarship is designed to assist students in fulfilling professional aspirations and is awarded to students based on such factors as academic excellence, demonstrated leadership, extracurricular activities and potential for successful study in law school.

HisBA’s 2018 2L scholarships will be awarded at the President’s Day Gala in May, 2018.

The deadline for the application submission was Sunday, April 8, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. Applications for 2019 will be available in the spring of 2019.

3L Scholarship Program

The Hispanic Bar Association of Houston awards scholarships to deserving third-year law students at each of the three Houston area law schools. The scholarship is designed to assist students in fulfilling professional aspirations and will be awarded to students based on financial need, demonstrated leadership and commitment toward the advancement of Hispanics in the legal profession, extracurricular activities and potential for successful study of the law.

HisBA’s 2018 3L scholarships will be awarded at the President’s Day Gala in May, 2018.

The deadline for the application submission was Sunday, April 8, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. Applications for 2019 will be available in the spring of 2019.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to receive the scholarships, applicants must be third-year law students attending a Houston area law school, must be members of the Hispanic Law Student Association (HLSA) at their law school, must be third-year law student graduating in either May 2017 or a second-year law student graduating in December 2017.

Applicants should only apply if the expenses related to the purchase of their bar review preparation course have not (or will not) be paid for, or taken care of, by any third party (including any law firm).

Scholarship for Excellence

The Hispanic Bar Association of Houston awards scholarships to deserving high school seniors attending a school in the City of Houston or residing in the City of Houston. The HisBA Scholarship for Excellence is designed to assist college-bound students in fulfilling professional aspirations. HisBA will award the Scholarship for Excellence based on: academic excellence and achievement, demonstrated leadership, commitment toward the advancement of the Hispanic community, and financial need. The HisBA Scholarship for Excellence is particularly focused on assisting a high school senior who will be the first in their family to attend college and who is also interested in pursuing a career in the legal profession.

The deadline to submit an application for the 2018-2019 HisBA Scholarship for Excellence is Friday, October 5, 2018, and applications must be submitted by 11:59 P.M. Download the HisBA Scholarship for Excellence Application here.

HisBA’s Scholarships for Excellence are awarded in the fall at HisBA’s Officer Installation Ceremony and Judicial/Legislative Mixer, which is tentatively scheduled on October 23, 2018. Recipients are highly encouraged to attend this event.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to receive HisBA’s Scholarship for Excellence, applicants must: (1) be a high school senior attending a school in the City of Houston or residing in the City of Houston during the current academic year; and (2) plan to attend a 2-year or 4-year college or university in the Fall of the subsequent year.
