Judge James DeAnda 2L Scholarship - 2021

Judge James DeAnda 2L Scholarship

Judge James DeAnda was a former Chief Judge of the United States District Courts for South Texas District and a long-time champion of civil rights.  DeAnda was born in Houston to Mexican immigrants and graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in 1950, when there were only a handful of Hispanic law students.  DeAnda became a renowned criminal and civil litigator, and a driving force in a host of cases brought to promote social justice for Mexican-Americans in law, politics, and education.  In 1954, DeAnda played a crucial role in Hernandez v. Texas, a pivotal case wherein the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Hispanics were a separate group deserving of the same constitutional protections as other minorities.  DeAnda went on to fight segregation of Hispanics within Texas' schools and later became the second Hispanic federal judge in the United States.

In Judge DeAnda’s memory, the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston will award one $1,500 scholarship to a deserving 2L law student at each of the three Houston area law schools (total of three scholarships, one student from each law school).  This scholarship is designed to assist students in fulfilling professional aspirations and is awarded to students based on such factors as academic excellence, demonstrated leadership, extracurricular activities, and potential for successful study in law school.

Your law school may jointly sponsor the Judge James DeAnda Scholarship to provide a scholarship that may total $3,000.00.
