The Hispanic Bar Association (HisBA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 1987, whose goal is the advancement of Hispanics in the legal profession.
To this end, HisBA organizes several activities throughout the year, including President’s Day. HisBA also raises funds for a number of scholarships which it awards to students attending Houston area high schools and law schools.By its mandate, HisBA is a non-political organization prohibited from endorsing or supporting political candidates. The following are certain activities sponsored by the association:
HisBA has the fortunate opportunity to award numerous scholarships to Houston-area students. HisBA awards three Scholarships for Excellence to deserving high school students residing in the City of Houston in order to assist these students with fulfillment of their professional aspirations. HisBA also awards scholarships to deserving first year law students attending Houston area-law schools. Additionally, HisBA jointly funds the Chief Judge James DeAnda Scholarship program that provides scholarships to second year law students attending Houston-area law schools. HisBA’s second year law student scholarship is matched dollar-for-dollar by each law school. These scholarships are awarded based on such factors including, but not limited to, academic excellence, financial need, demonstrated leadership, and commitment towards the advancement of Hispanics. Lastly, HisBA awards bar review scholarships to deserving third year law students attending Houston-area law schools. The bar review scholarships are designed to assist economically disadvantaged students by paying for a portion of the cost associated with a bar review study course.
HisBA is an active participant in the Houston Bar Association’s Law Day Program. Through this workshop, HisBA members and members of various other organizations throughout Houston’s legal community assist young Latino children in drawing posters related to a “Law Day” theme chosen by the American Bar Association. A selected Law Day book is read to the children explaining the program’s theme.
HisBA proudly hosts its Annual President’s Day. President’s Day consists of a Judicial Luncheon and Evening Gala. Underwriters and sponsors from the Houston community and beyond help to fund these special events. President’s Day affords HisBA the opportunity to show its appreciation to the local members of the judiciary, but also to honor and recognize a person whose outstanding character, legal ability, and service to the Hispanic community serves as a model to other Hispanics in the legal profession by awarding them HisBA’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Past recipients of this award include Chief Judge James DeAnda, Texas Supreme Court Justice Raul Gonzalez, U.S. District Court Judge Hilda Tagle, and Greenberg Traurig, LLP Shareholder Roland Garcia. Gala guests are also presented with a Keynote Address which has been provided by many influential members of the legal community including Thomas Saenz, President and General Counsel of MALDEF, Curtis Frasier, General Counsel of Shell, and Donna Harris, Managing Counsel of Wells Fargo & Company. All law school scholarships are awarded and presented during the President’s Day Gala.
